The Lewis log home, near the Twin Cites in Stillwater, MN, had seen its share of problems with log rot over the years. For a long time – early on in this home’s life – the stain was not maintained very well, which allowed rot to develop. There was one corner in particular that had many rotten crowns (log ends).
Mr. Lewis knew he had to do something to keep his home from deteriorating any further so he contacted Edmunds and Company and after meeting at the site with James, we came up with a plan to repair the rotten logs.
The southeast corner of the house had a few logs that were obviously rotten. As we tore into the area and removed the most rotten areas, we discovered that other adjacent logs had also succumbed to dry rot. In the end, much of this corner had to be refaced with half-logs. The “health” of the building had been restored.
Sometimes the rot is not caught in time and it gets deeper that 50% through the log. In this case, it may be necessary to replace the rotten log with a whole log. Click here to learn more.
