Log Home Maintenance for the Fall

September 12, 2014 by Edmunds & Company

Rot not apparent

These logs don’t look so bad, right?

Log home maintenance is important year round. With the wet weather coming and all signs pointing to fall, it’s a particularly important time to assess the condition of your logs before they have to withstand the harsh conditions of winter. It’s time to look at how your log home is weathering the wet conditions.

How to detect rot: Problems with rot are not always readily apparent. It actually takes walking around the entire home, looking closely at all the logs for telltale signs of log rot.

Looking closer there is the unmistakable sign of too much moisture – mushrooms growing on the logs.

Mushrooms growing on lower logs

Notice the green discoloration in the logs and the crack that is open on the up side of the log. Rot rears its ugly head.

One log home maintenance task that homeowners can do themselves is to caulk cracks (checks) in their logs with a quality caulk. Here is a link to our site that gives more information on caulking cracks in logs.
